TOTEM: Trainee Organised Teaching in Echocardiography on Echocardiography for Medicine, Anaesthesia and Intensive Care, is a education series directed at clinicians wanting to further their echo skillset, but perhaps don’t have the resources available within their local region. Experts in their field have kindly volunteered their time to provide sessions focused on the key questions outlined by the FUSIC: Haemodynamic curriculum. The key paper outlining those questions can be found here.
A dedicated website for these resources will be available soon, but in the meantime they are hosted here to ensure those unable toattend the live session can still benefit from this great education!
We have received feedback from trainees with hearing impairment and understand it would be beneficial to create a transcript that can be reviewed before and after watching the video. We will work on this and update as soon as possible.

Trainee Journey in FUSIC HD
Dr Samson Kendall
Samson is an Anaesthetics and ICM trainee in London, UK. He has an interest in echocardiography and was one of the first clinicians to complete the FUSIC: HD accreditation! Here, he takes us through his journey through FUSIC: HD, including some top tips that are invaluable for anyone embarking on accreditation!

We’re very lucky to have Chris teaching us this first session – Chris is a Consultant Intensivist in London and is both TTE and TOE Level 2 accredited, has both published multiple papers and written books on critical care echo, is the creator of “ultrasound for the generalist” website and is an experienced educator in echo.

Stroke Volume Responsiveness
Dr Richard Fisher
Richard is an Intensive Care Consultant at King’s College Hospital London. He is an incredible echo educator, is dual accredited in transthoracic and transoesophageal echo with the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging, and is national lead for the BSE Level 1 programme.
He has some incredible echo resources available for free here. We are very lucky to have him teaching this session on stroke volume responsiveness.
LVOT Obstruction
Dr Jon Aron
Jon is an Anaesthetics and Intensive Care Medicine Consultant who trained in London and has worked in St George’s Hospital for >7 years as a consultant until early this year. He was part of the initial FUSIC HD committee and remains on the EDEC sub-committee. He’s the Founder/Director of South London Intensive Care Echo (SLICE), an honorary senior lecturer at St George’s University and is a very experienced echo educator. He has tonnes of teaching online already that I recommend you to look at (see link below).
We’re really lucky to have him teaching us on the 5th FUSIC HD question: Is there Systolic Anterior Motion of the Mitral Valve (SAM) (and LV Outflow Tract Obstruction (LVOTO)).
VExUS
Dr Segun Olusanya
Segun is an ICU Consultant with a special interest in ECMO, currently working on the ECMO unit at Barts Hospital in London. He’s an expert in echo, is BSE level 2 accredited, and is a very active educator to the POCUS UK community. He was one of the first people in the UK to learn VExUS and sits on the ICS FUSIC HD sub-committee. We are lucky to have him teach us!

Dr Jon Aron
Jonny is a Consultant Anaesthetist and Intensivist from St George’s Hospital, part of the initial FUSIC HD sub-committee, now EDEC Exam lead and SLICE Co-director. His last talk on LVOTO and SAM was excellently delivered and available above. He has previously written a book chapter on Tamponade!

Manoj is an Anaesthetics Trainee in West Yorkshire. He’s the founder of Leeds FUSIC, Co-founder of ORCA (Online Radiology for Critical and Acute care) and is a FUSIC HD mentor. We’re lucky to have him teaching us on left Atrial Pressure.

Aortic Valve
Hannah Conway
Hannah is a Cardiac ACCP with extensive experience teaching echo and a lot of echo credentials. Most notably, for those accrediting in FUSIC HD, she’s the National Lead for FUSIC Heart and is on the FUSIC HD committee. She was also an examiner at the first FUSIC HD exam last May. We’re very luck to have her teaching this session on the Aortic Valve, and again in November on RWMAs.
Mitral Valve
Dr Dave Rees
Dave is a cardiac anaesthetics and ICM consultant at St Bartholomew’s Hospital London and an expert clinician and scanner. He is dual accredited in transthoracic and transoesophageal echo (L2) with the BSE. This talk will hopefully leave you all with the confidence of knowing whether a mitral lesion you have spotted is haemodynamically significant.
