This accreditation pathway is a joint venture between the British Society of Echocardiography (BSE) and the Association of Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia and Critical Care (ACTACC) and is designed for cardiologists, sonographers, intensivists, anaesthetists or cardiothoracic surgeons.
It provides training and a framework for clinicians to perform a formal TOE with accreditation lasting for 5 years.
The BSE provide guidance as to the minimum requirements for a comprehensive TOE study. A link to the minimum dataset document is here.
This follows a similar structure to the other BSE accreditation pathways (TTE Level 2, ACCE):
- Knowledge MCQ exam – theory and video reporting.
- Completion of a logbook of scans, anonymised and uploaded formal reports to the BSE online logbook. 125 formally reported scans are required for completion unless the clinician holds the TTE, ACCE or EACVI TTE/TOE accreditation where 75 cases are required.
- Practical exam with 5 specific video cases. The required cases can be found in the accreditation pack on the BSE website.
